In a lot of ways, this chart and the discussion about time period is very much a conversation about when, but for me, it’s inseparable from the conversation about where. When we ask questions about the where of a prophet, we’re referring to the geographical location of the audience. Is the prophet writing to the northern kingdom of Israel or the southern kingdom of Judah?

Those “locations” are completely locked into a time of history. After the Assyrian time period, the where of Israel has changed dramatically. The exilic prophets are speaking to the people of Judah when they are displaced in Babylon. So asking the question of where this prophet is being written is completely connected to the time period and historical setting of the prophet. Amos is written to “pre-Assyrian” Israel in the north and Micah to their counterparts in the south. But Ezekiel is written to a people sitting in a foreign land. The where question makes a big difference in biblical interpretation of the prophets.
